The thresholds
The doors, door-frames, and steps you cross to enter the temple — the transitions from outside into the sacred. In Kerala tradition, every threshold is consecrated.

The sanctum
The windowless innermost chamber where the deity stands. Only the priest enters. The pedestal beneath Him, the water outlet for the daily bathing rite, the rim of the roof, the conical crown above.

The lamps
Brass oil lamps that line the precinct and stand in the courtyard, lit at every dusk worship. The Vilakkumaadam — the great wall of lamps along each prakara wall — and the Deepa Stambham, the lamp tower.

The bell sounded as each puja begins; the offering stones (Balikkallu) where the temple's daily naivedyam is placed for the guardian deities; the utensils used to prepare food offered to the Lord and then to devotees.

The gold-plated ceremonial flagstaff (kodi maram) in the courtyard, raised first before any other element. The pillars of the surrounding hall. The murals on the inner and outer walls. The stone pradakshina paths around the sanctum.

A Family Certificate. A Darshan Pass.
Family Certificate — a formal recognition document, signed by the Thantri, naming the patron family and the seva they have given to the temple. The patron's name and gotra enter the temple register, kept for as long as the temple stands.
Darshan Pass — entitles five family members to direct darshan of Guruvayurappan on visits to the temple, including on festival days when access is otherwise restricted.
